City Explains Criteria for Sounding Sirens

The last three weekends have brought severe weather to Huron, with storms packing dangerously high winds. During two of those storms, the sirens were sounded. Some residents have questioned why the city used the sirens when a tornado warning hadn’t been issued.

Huron police chief Kevin Van Diepen says part of the confusion stems from the use of term “tornado sirens”

Van Diepen explained the criteria for sounding the sirens.

In the case of Sunday’s sirens, Van Diepen says a funnel cloud was spotted over Huron.

Van Diepen says in hindsight sounding the sirens earlier on the 13th might have prevented some of the property damage at the Karen soccer tournament.
