A proposed ordinance that would cover the use of sea/land metal shipping containers in Huron was before the Huron City Commission last night.
City Planner Ralph Borkowski says a resident came to his office asking if they could permanently place a container in his backyard to use as a shed.
The City Planning Commission said the containers might be allowed for short-term purposes in areas zones business or industrial.
Some commissioners felt the ordinance might cause problems for businesses that currently use these containers. Commissioner Doug Kludt says he would like to get input from retailers such as Wal-Mart and Runnings and the vendors of the sea/land containers.
The commission voted to return to the matter to the City Planning Commission for further discussion.
In other business, the city approved second and final reading of an ordinance renaming U street in the West Industrial Park Union Avenue. The change is being made to avoid confusion for people attempting to locate the street.
