City Commission Approves Bid For Demolition Of Old Treatment Plant

City CommissionThe Huron City Commission breezed through the first part of their weekly meeting Monday night. The Commission, meeting as the Board of Adjustment, approved two variance requests. The first request was filed by Riverview Methodist Church to construct a double faced sign. At issue was the setback and square footage of the sign. The second variance will allow the Wildflower Yoga Company to operate a yoga studio out of a residential structure on 3rd street in an area zone Limited Business District. When the City Commission reconvened, Commissioners approved a bid by Morris Inc. of Pierre for demolition and removal of the former Water Treatment Plant near the 3rd Street dam. The building has been vacant since 2005 and attempts to re-purpose the building have failed. Morris bid the project at 117-thousand-500-dollars and the bid includes an alternate to place clay on top of the area. The city will likely place topsoil and seed the area in the spring. Morris has until July of 2016 to complete the project. Removal of the plant is a part of the James River Master Plan. Commissioners also approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Town of Virgil that allows Huron City Attorney Jeff Banks to act as City Attorney for the Beadle County town. Most of the work Banks will be responsible for is in regards to nuisance properties and the occasional legal question. City offices will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving. Thursday garbage and recycling will be collected on Wednesday this week and the City Rubble Site will be closed on Thursday and Saturday but open Friday. The Huron City Commission meet in executive session for an contractual and litigation matters.
