The statues referenced by Schrader will represent the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard/Merchant Marine, women in the military and a dog to represent the service of canines in the military. Schrader says another statue will be added to the memorial….
The 2012-2013 Leadership Huron class has taken ownership of raising money for the statue portion of the project, while veteran’s groups across Beadle County are working on the memorial wall. The City of Huron has agreed to provide in-kind assistance to the project, from the Street, Water, Parks and Rec and Engineering Departments. City Planner Ralph Borkowski says there may be some surprises below the current memorial that may make construction problematic…
Because of planning delays, the bricks containing veteran’s names may not be finalized until the Spring of 2014. Leadership Huron has the goal of dedicating the statue portion of the project by the 4th of July or possibly Memorial Day. Leadership Huron is planning a dueling pianos event on March 9th at the Crossroads Hotel. More details on the fund raising event will be released in the coming weeks.
