The Huron city commission has approved the first reading of a change to an ordinance that pertains to the discharge of firearms east of Custer Avenue and south of the railroad right-of-way, specifically in sections 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11, in Custer Township.
The new ordinance states “there shall be no discharge of a shotshell shotgun or shooting arrows from a bow outside of city limits that is within six hundred sixty feet of a building within city limits, no discharge of a slug shotgun or muzzleloader outside of city limits that is within one-quarter mile of a building within city limits, and no discharge of a rifle outside of city limits that is within one mile of a building within city limits.”
City Planner Ralph Borkowski says he believes the change better reflects the intent of city commission when the paragraph was added to the city ordinance nine years ago.
Second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for Dec. 10th.
The city has also approved a resolution setting rates and fees for city services in 2019.
Finance Director Paulynn Carey says the majority of the changes are the regular cost of living increase. However, she reminds residents that the sewer rate is increasing significantly. Carey says the increase is necessary in order to be in compliance with DENR regulations which is required for grant eligibility and future funding for projects.
The commission also approved a 2018-2019 retail on-off sale malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine license filed by Picante, at 107 Lincoln Avenue SW. The license is on hold until Picante completes its remodeling.
