Bodies of Two Huron Men Recovered From Waste Lagoon

The bodies of two missing Huron men have been recovered from the City of Huron Waste Lagoons.

Yesterday, October 7th, the Huron Police Department received a call on what appeared to be a motor vehicle accident with damage to a fence at the lagoons located east of Huron.

Upon further investigation, a body was located in the lagoon. The Beadle County Dive Team was called in by City of Huron Fire Chief Ron Hines.

The dive team located a car that was submerged in the water. Lincoln Auto Salvage Wrecker Service was called in to assist with the removal of the car. During the removal of the car, a second body was recovered.

It appears as though the car left 4th St SE at the intersection of Custer Ave SE where it is a “T” intersection, going through the ditch and the fence to the lagoon property and then into the lagoon. It appears that speed and alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. At this time, it appears as though it was a one-vehicle crash.

Both males were listed as missing on Sunday, Oct. 6th, and were last seen on Saturday, Oct. 5th, at 9:30 pm.

The men are identified as 29-year-old Mauricio Lopez-Morales and 23-year-old Francisco Artemio Lopez-Ramos.

The vehicle recovered was a Blue 2009 Toyota Corolla with Iowa license plates.

Assisting with the investigation was the Huron Fire Department, Beadle County Dive Team, Beadle County Sheriff’s Office, Beadle County Coroner, and the Huron Police Department. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
