A bicyclist sustained serious injuries Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the 21st Street S. and Dakota Avenue S intersection. The Huron Police Dispatch Center received a 911 call around 3:23 pm reporting the accident.
The bicyclist was traveling west when the light turned green for east and west traffic. As the bicyclist entered the intersection, she was narrowly missed by a westbound vehicle on 21st Street SE that was turning north into the outside lane of Dakota Ave. S. As the bicyclist continued to cross the street, she was struck by a second vehicle. The vehicle had been traveling eastbound on 21st SW and was turning north into the inside lane of Dakota S.
The vehicle that struck the bicyclist was driven by a juvenile. The juvenile didn’t see the bicyclist because her vision was blocked by the other vehicle that almost struck her.
The bicyclist sustained serious injuries from the accident and was transported to Huron Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The Huron Police Department would like to remind everyone to be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicyclists that are crossing the street. As the weather warms up, more people will be using crosswalks throughout the city.
