In a very short court hearing via I-TV from the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls Tuesday, a Kansas man pleaded not guilty to four charges stemming from his escape from the Beadle County Jail. Judge Jon Erickson entered not guilty plea’s on Charles Beeney’s behalf. Beeney has applied for a court-appointed attorney and Erickson said he would try and get a lawyer assigned as soon as he could. Beeney is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft and escape. Beeney threatened jailers in Huron, telling them he had a home made gun and would kill the jailers if they did not let him go. Beeney then changed out of his jail uniform and was chased by Huron police until he was lost amongst rail cars in the Canadian Pacific railroad yard. Beeney stole a pick-up from a rural Beadle County residence and drove to Sioux Falls where he was arrested. The 45-year-old is currently in the State Pen serving a two year sentence for aggravated eluding out of Jerauld County. He has active warrants out in his home state of Kansas and has a history of escape attempts in North Dakota.
