
The “bathroom bill” submitted by Representative Brandei Schaefbauer from Brown County following a bill filled by Representative Phil Jensen of Rapid City last week went before the House State Affairs committee. Schaefbauer explains why the measure was needed.
The bill filed by Jensen last week was directed at the Huron School District and filed the day before Huron Day at the capitol. Cody Grace from Huron spoke to the committee about why the bill was needed.
Vermillion School Board member Mike Phelan spoke to the committee stating that the bill would change current state law and would single out the Vermillion School District. He said the district may be the only one in the state with a gender inclusive bathroom policy on the books.
HB1259A received a do pass vote of 11-2 and was sent to the full House for consideration.
