Former AFSCME Council 59 Executive Director Paul Aylward will become Huron’s next mayor. The ex-union rep beat out current City Commissioner Kerwin Haeder for the center seat at City Hall with 62-point-four-seven percent of the vote. Aylward defeated Haeder 1,864 to1,120, a difference of 744 votes. Haeder got 37-percent of the vote. The City Commission seat vacated by Haeder was up for grabs Tuesday night as well. Garry Harrington garnered over one-thousand votes to beat Dick Freske 1,896 to 857, a spread of 1039 votes….
68-percent of voters chose Harrington over Freske with 31-percent of the vote. An attempt to contact Aylward has been made, however the calls have not been returned at this time. 738 absentee ballots were cast in an election that saw three candidates running for two school board spots and the 71-percent approval of a 22-million dollar bond issue for renovations to Huron’s elementary schools.
