The city got an update on several maintenance and repair projects on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds and some numbers from the National Junior High Finals Rodeo during the State Fair’s semi-annual report last night.
State Fair manager Peggy Besch also shared some potentially good news regarding the future of racing in Huron.
Besch thanked the community, particularly volunteers and the city street department for its support during the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. There were 1,068 contestants and 47,032 attendees across the 13 rodeo performances, June 24th thru 30th. Besch says event organizers were impressed with the numbers.
Besch says they are working on preliminary numbers to determine how the Fair is sitting after the first year of the rodeo.
Besch gave an overview of some of the projects recently completed or continue on the fairgrounds. Friday a complete electrical upgrade of the Open Class Beef Barn was completed.
This year is the 100th-anniversary celebration of the State Fair Grandstand. Besch says the third phase of the Grandstand renovation project is currently underway.
There are almost 1,700 camping sites reserved for Fair time. Besch says they are looking for private housing.
