The Huron Police Department is warning residents to be wary of text messages claiming that your debt card has been deactivated. Scammers are sending out multiple text messages saying a customers Wells Fargo debt card has been deactivated and that the person contacted should go to the website included in the text to fix the faux problem. Huron Public Safety Director Gary Will Jr. says reputable, legitimate financial institutions will never try and contact customers through text message. Banks or credit unions will contact you via a phone call or letter and request you come to the physical building in person to address any issues. At least 24 people received the text, some of those, who commented on the Performance Radio News page on Facebook say they got the message, multiple times. Many of those commented that they are not even Wells Fargo customers. Others knew immediately the message was a fake. Your best course of action is to not respond back to the text but to forward the text message to Wells Fargo at [email protected], the delete the message.
