The South Dakota House voted 37 to 33 last week, to approve HB 1097, legislation that tweaks the ag land valuation method. One of the bill’s sponsors Representative Mary Duvall of Pierre says the present system hasn’t been working very well and needed adjusting.
Duvall says HB 1097 defines what land should be classified as agricultural land for tax purposes. She says that includes meeting a minimum size and making sure that at least $1,000 of gross income comes from ag production.
Duvall says she thinks the Senate will end up sending their measure to the Ag Land Valuation Task Force to do an interim study and refine the legislation.
