AG Candidates Say Berget Execution Was the Right Decision

The State of South Dakota executed Rodney Berget this week for the death of prison guard Ronald R.J. Johnson in 2011.

Republican Attorney General candidate Jason Ravnsborg says it was the right decision.

Ravnsborg says Berget was a continued threat inside the prison.

Democratic Attorney General candidate Randy Seiler of Fort Pierre says in this case, the death penalty was a warranted punishment.

The execution was delayed about six hours while the US Supreme Court considered—and denied– a last-minute request for a delay. Seiler says having the nation’s high court involved was a good thing.
