Secretary Of State's Office Still Checking Signatures On 1 Cent Tax Petition

The validation process is continuing on a possible ballot issue for next fall. A coalition of education and health care groups turned in almost thirty four thousand petitions signatures on November first.  South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant says they have made their first pass through the petitions…

The petition drive, if validated, would put the question of a one cent increase in the state sales tax out to voters.  Gant says they now have their sample ready for cross checking…

Gant says he doesn’t want to guess when they will be ready to make a final decision on the issue…

Its estimated a one cent sales tax increase would raise about one hundred eighty million dollars a year.
