HPD Rescue Woman From James River

Huron police pulled a 37-year-old woman from the James River early Sunday morning after an apparent suicide attempt.  An officer patrolling the area near Jersey Avenue and Third Street around 2:30 AM noticed an unoccupied vehicle parked near the Third Street Bridge and a female standing near the edge of the bridge. When the officer turned to investigate, the woman jumped into the river. The woman resurfaced and was carried downstream of the dam about three-quarters of a mile. The woman indicated to officers who followed along the river bank that she did not want help and that she wanted to end her life. After 33-minutes officers managed to pull the woman out of the river near the waste water treatment plant, where she was transported to Huron Regional Medical Center for treatment and observation. The Beadle County Dive Team and Huron Fire and Ambulance assisted in the rescue.
