The Rapid City Pierre and Eastern railroad is looking to update its locomotive fleet to pull heavier and longer trains across South Dakota. Jerry Vest, Sr vice president of government and industry affairs for RC P & E said plans will require an upgrade to the Huron maintenance shop.
Vest spoke recently before the South Dakota Railroad Board requesting a 50 percent Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant. He talks about the future plans for the Huron yard.
Last week the South Dakota Railroad Board approved the Department of Transportation to work with RC P & E on a 28 million dollar CRISI grant that would be split 50/50 by the railroad and the grant for the locomotive shop and up to 8 locomotives.
