The Huron Police Department reported no major crimes or traffic fatalities during this year’s South Dakota State Fair. Public Information Officer Sergeant Brandon Neitzert says dispatchers took 430 calls during the five-day Fair. 122 of those calls were emergency 9-1-1 calls. 137 traffic stops netted 46 citations and 91 courtesy warnings. Huron police wrote 150 parking citations for violations of city ordinances in the area around the Fairgrounds. There were four accidents, reported, one of which resulted in minor injuries to the driver. The Huron police also assisted the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Beadle County Sheriff’s Office with three sobriety checkpoints. 290 vehicles were stopped and Nietzert says a number of arrests were made for driving under the influence and alcohol and drug charges. Specific checkpoint numbers are kept by the Highway Patrol. The numbers are only those held by the Huron Police and do not include information from the Highway Patrol, Beadle County Sheriff or the temporary State Fair Police Force.
