Dr. Anthony Loewen Earns Board Certification

Huron, S.d. – Anthony Loewen, MD, a local general surgeon, successfully passed the required examinations and is now board-certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).

Dr. Loewen provides general surgery care for patients of all ages, including advanced laparoscopic surgery, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery, breast and skin cancer surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, endoscopy (colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy), hernia management and trauma care.

Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of residency training following medical school, met all ABS training requirements, and successfully completed a rigorous ABS examination process. Board certification by the ABS is a voluntary process that demonstrates a surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and quality patient care.

“Board certification is especially necessary in surgery to demonstrate that a surgeon is updated on all the latest techniques and can safely take care of surgical patients,” explained Dr. Loewen, who practices with his father in the New Life Clinic. “It was important for me to demonstrate that certification to my patients, but also to support the American College of Surgeons in its endeavor to create a national workforce of surgeons who have met these standards.”

Dr. Loewen, or Tony as many know him, is no stranger to Huron or HRMC having grown up here and graduated from James Valley Christian School. He worked in HRMC’s emergency room before starting medical school at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in premedical biochemistry from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. Dr. Loewen completed his residency at St. Joseph Hospital General Surgery in Denver, Colorado, and joined the HRMC medical staff in August 2020.
