Warmer weather brings out motorcycle riders that have been absent for many months. With the change brings the need to remind all drivers of some safety recommendations to keep the summer activities more enjoyable. The South Dakota Highway Patrol places a high priority on keeping the traveling public safe on the roads. Trooper Joelle Schuknecht with the SD Highway patrol encourages rider to gain as much experience as they can to help with riding safety.
Defensive driving is part of the safety message that the patrol discusses in their safety presentations. Schuknecht mentions things that riders new or experienced should always watch for.

With spring the signs advising “look motorcycles are everywhere” are a common appearance. It’s a good safety point for motor vehicle drivers of any type to be cautious for motorcycles on the road. Joelle talks about what those drivers should watch for.
For motorcycle safety and being seen, riding in groups is beneficial but she encourages caution.
