A Highmore pheasant lodge owner avoided jail time but received heavy fines and the lose of a rifle after being sentenced for killing a Golden Eagle. Michael Solberg runs the Grand Lodge pheasant hunting operation in Highmore. He admitted to shooting one Golden Eagle and at least 20 hawks including Red-Tail and Rough Legged Hawks since 2008. Solberg says he shot the birds to protect pheasants used for his business. Solberg does have a hunting preserve license from the State of South Dakota that allows him to conduct guided pheasant hunts. Solberg was sentenced to monetary penalties of a 12-hundred 50-dollar fine and 10-thousand dollars restitution. The 43-year-old must also forfeit the Remington model 700 rifle he used to shoot the Golden Eagle in September of 2008. He also admitted to shooting at but not killing Bald Eagles on or near his hunting lodge.
