TELEPHONE SCAMMERS OVERACTIVE

Fraudulent telemarketing calls are not new but with the Coronavirus pandemic this year the numbers of scammer calls to home phones, cell phones and business lines has many of us on alert.  The SD Division of Consumer Protection with the Office of Attorney General keeps track of the ongoing telemarketing threats and works to prevent citizens from being taken advantage of.  Jody Gillaspie, Director of the Consumer Protection Division talks about what some of the most frequent scams are lately.

Gillaspie says with everything going on this year its been especially difficult to keep track of the scammers.

Many calls lately focus on convincing the recipient that there is a problem with their social security number.  Gillaspie said that is just to get their attention.

She said no one is safe from scammer attempts.

She said its not a good idea to try and scam the scammers.

The National Do not Call registry has been an option since 2003 registering your lines is helpful but….

To report fraud call  the Division of Consumer Protection office at 800-300-1986.
