HRMC Teaming Up for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Huron, S.d. – October is Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness month and Huron Regional Medical Center is partnering with several groups in the community to raise awareness and encourage women to schedule a mammogram through a variety of activities and by offering free mammograms.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will get breast cancer. South Dakota has the second-highest female breast cancer incidence rate in the U.S. and every week in South Dakota, 14 people are diagnosed with breast cancer and two people die of the disease, according to a 2015 report by Susan G. Komen-South Dakota.

To help educate community members of these startling statistics and increase the number of women receiving regular mammograms, HRMC is partnering with several local groups. This year, there are a few changes to reflect the need to maintain social distancing practices in response to COVID-19.

  • October 5-23 – While Runnings Farm & Fleet annual Ladies’ Night Out has been cancelled, the Huron location is still committed to raising funds and awareness. Shoppers can donate $1 to purchase a pink ribbon to honor a survivor or loved one. Also, themed buckets, filled with donated items will be auctioned weekly online bidpal.net/runnings. HRMC mammography staff will be on-hand on October 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. providing early detection information and scheduling mammograms.
  • Friday, October 23, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Prostrollo Motor Sales is hosting the fourth annual 1-Mile Walk for Breast Cancer at Ravine Lake. Community members are invited to this come-and-go walk to raise awareness and funds to prevent breast cancer. Pre-register online at allsportcentral.com or at Prostrollo’s for a free goodie bag at the walk. Lunch will be served.
  • Tuesday, October 27, 7 p.m., Pink Out Volleyball against Harrisburg at the Huron Arena – Huron High School volleyball players are selling pink “DREAM BIGGER” t-shirts to be worn to the game with funds benefitting the HRMC Foundation’s We’ve Got You Covered program. Contact a player to order a shirt or visit the Huron Volleyball Club Facebook page. An online basket auction will also be held the week of the game.

All area women are encouraged to help fight breast cancer by having regular mammograms. The We’ve Got You Covered program helps by offering free screening mammograms to women in need thanks to generous HRMC Foundation donors and partnerships like those happening this October.
