The city has approved a request by the Huron Veterans Council and the Elks Lodge to make improvements to the Beadle County Veterans Memorial. The Huron Veterans Council wants to add landscaping to the site. Two trees would be located behind the memorial wall. East River Nursery will provide and install the trees at no cost to the city.

Coordinator Ralph Borkowski says If the trees interrupt the underground irrigation, the Veterans Council will make the revisions.

The Elks Lodge wants to add a metal dropbox to the north side of the site where members of the community can deposit used and worn US flags. Huron Welding will build and install the flag dropbox at no cost to the City of Huron. The box will be installed on existing concrete or on a new concrete pad to make it easier to maintain the lawn around the dropbox.

There will also be a vinyl wrap on the box with the VFW, American Legion, Elks #444, and Boy Scouts logos.

Also last night, the board of adjustment approved a variance request by Kirk & Heather Dietz, 217 7th Street SE, to construct an addition on the north side of the smaller garage, which will be 114 square feet over code. Code states that all structures on the lot including accessory buildings shall not exceed 30% of the lot area in an area zoned one family, two family and townhouse residential district.
