A 24-year-old Guatemalan citizen who had a run-in with the Jerauld County Sheriff’s office has pleaded guilty to being in the United States illegally after previously being deported. Gilmar Santiago-Lopez was encountered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the Sheriff’s office in Wessington Springs during an investigation of vehicle registration fraud. During the investigation it was learned that Lopez was originally removed from the country in January of 2009. Lopez had not made a request with the Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Attorney General for re-entry to the United States. Sentencing for Lopez is August 4th
