Mitchell Woman and Son Charged with Animal Cruelty

A 44 year old Mitchell woman and her 19 year old son are each charged with 10 counts of felony animal cruelty after authorities removed thirty cats from two residences Thursday and Friday.

Neighbors of 1401 South Main #104 alerted Police of stray cats plus a strong odor of cat feces and urine. Officers accompanied by Sioux Falls Humane Society staff executed a search warrant there and at 200 East 15th Avenue #139.

Along with the animals authorities found cat feces and garbage at both locations.

Police say Brandy L. Smith maintained or lived at the residences and was aware of the conditions. Michael Lee-David Smith apparently fed the cats and was aware of the animal’s living conditions as well.

Brandy Smith apparently maintains a Facebook site “Heart and Soul Kitty Sanctuary” where she apparently solicited money for the care of elderly, disabled and abused cats.

This is an ongoing animal rescue and investigation. More charges are possible.

Cruelty to animals is punishable by up to two years in prison and or a $4,000 fine on each count.
