New Police Chief Named

Twelve people applied both internally and externally for the police chief job. Six were interviewed, before three were selected for second interviews. Schmitt was placed on administrative leave and eventually resigned and retired as police chief following comments he made while testifying before the South Dakota Legislature on an illegal immigration bill that failed to pass. Schmitt was with the department for 32 years and was chief for 10.
