City Authorizes Return of Bulldoze, Build, Beautify Grant

The Huron City Commission has authorized the Mayor to request that a Bulldoze, Build, Beautify Grant be returned to the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

Last July, the city authorized the Mayor to sign a Community Development
Block (CDBG) grant application that would have allowed James Valley Housing to tear down a house at 803 Beach Ave SE, and replace it with a site built or Governor’s House.

The City was awarded $13,112.50 in CDBG funds to assist with the
demolition and removal of the house.

City Planner Ralph Borkowski said the funding came with requirements regarding testing and removal of lead and asbestos.

Mayor Paul Aylward said the grant looked like a good deal at the time.

Borkowski says an inspector has determined that based on when the home was built it is likely asbestos and lead painting would be present.

In other business, the city has awarded the bid for sanitary sewer main lining to Hydro-Klean, LLC. of Des Moines, IA for a total of $597,433.64.

You are reminded, city offices will be closed next Monday, Oct. 8th, in observance of the Native American / Columbus Day holiday.

The Solid Waste Department Rubble Site will also be closed in observance of the holiday.

Next Monday’s Garbage, Recycle, and Grass will be collected on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018. You are asked to have your containers out Tuesday evening as the trucks will not be rerouted.
