Recall Petition Drive On To Oust McGirr

A group of Huron residents is gathering signatures on petitions requesting a recall of Mayor Dave McGirr. Attorney Ron Volesky has been asked by the group to talk with the media on the recall campaign…

Volesky did not have any specific figure for the number of signatures that have been gathered so far, but did say several hundred have been gathered after two days of actively seeking signatures. The group needs around 1200 signatures. If enough valid signatures are collected, the Huron City Commission, with McGirr presiding would set an election date. Even if the recall is allowed, McGirr would be in the running to keep his job…

Volesky, who has previously sat on the Huron City Commission and has recently run for Governor, Attorney General, and a seat in the State Senate says he has no desire to run for Mayor should the recall succeed…

Those petitioning for the recall have 60 days to gather the required number of valid signatures. Former Police Chief Doug Schmitt retired and resigned from the Huron police department weeks after being placed on administrative leave by the city following comments he made during a Senate hearing on in immigration enforcement bill that ultimately failed to become law. Schmitt claimed during his testimony to have information regarding the hiring of illegal immigrants at two Huron area businesses.
