Union Official Aylward Questions Prison Policy

A former member of a prison advisory panel says he wonders if the guard who was killed at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls should have been working alone with the two inmates accused of killing him.  Paul Aylward, a labor union official from Huron, recently ended his term on the state Corrections Commission. He says he does not know details about the slaying or prison procedures, but questions whether guards should work alone with inmates in potentially dangerous situations.  Inmates Rodney Berget and Eric Robert have been charged with first-degree murder for the slaying of longtime prison guard Ronald E. Johnson in a prison industries area. An investigator’s report said the inmates attacked Johnson and used his uniform in an unsuccessful attempt to escape Tuesday.
