ABERDEEN, SD – A meeting next Wednesday will consider how moving Aberdeen’s postal operations to Huron would affect local businesses.
Aberdeen city officials learned last week that the U.S. Postal Service will conduct a study to determine the feasibility of consolidating some local postal operations to the Dakota Central Processing and Distribution Facility in Huron. A postal service letter says that a 20 percent decline in mail volume since 2007 has resulted in historically large deficits. Julie Johnson of Absolutely! Aberdeen says the 8 a.m. meeting at the Aberdeen Development Corp. offices is designed for businesses that have time-sensitive needs. She says officials are trying to develop a community response. If the study supports changing mail processing operations, the postal service would hold a public meeting.
