Fallen Members of SD Law Enforcement Honored at Service in Pierre

This is National Police Week and the South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service was held Wed. morning in Pierre.

The service included the reading of the names of all of the members of law enforcement who have died in the line of duty, including three officers with the Huron Police Department.

Police officer Clifford Hawley was shot and killed when he attempted to break up a fight on Sept. 7th, 1909.

Deputy Police Chief Virgil Deyo was shot and killed while searching for a suspect on Nov. 29th, 1966.

Sergeant Thomas Callies was stabbed to death on March 30th, 1982 when he and another officer responded to a domestic disturbance at a local residence on Frank Street.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says it doesn’t happen often in South Dakota, but deaths in the line of duty do happen.

Jackley says members of law enforcement are the front line in protecting the public while the Attorney General’s Office and county states attorneys work to ensure criminals are punished.
