New Mitchell Gun Museum Tells Story of Native American Wars

Mitchell’s newest museum is up and running. The Guns of History Gun Gallery is located at 700 North Sanborn.

It brings the history of the Native American Wars from 1860-1890 to life with actual weapons associated with the Battle of Little Big Horn, Wounded Knee, Rosebud and more.

Museum owner Austin McPeek says the project started four years ago when historian and gun collector Wendell Grangaard asked to purchase an Indian gun at the Mitchell gun show. It goes beyond weaponry…

The walls are lined with pictures of prominent Native American leaders from the era and extensive descriptions of their guns on display.
