Red Cross to Hold Sound the Alarm Event in Huron

This spring, in an effort to save lives and help end home fire tragedies, the American Red Cross will Sound the Alarm through a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events in more than 100 communities in the United States.

Volunteers and partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms across the country. Communities were selected in every state and Huron will represent South Dakota in this nationwide campaign.

For the fourth year in a row, the Red Cross, Huron Fire Department, and community volunteers will go door-to-door installing free smoke alarms and helping families create escape plans.

The event will be this Saturday, May 12, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Volunteers will meet at Huron Community Campus Center.

Since this partnership began in 2015, the Red Cross and local partners have installed 823 alarms in Beadle County, making homes safer for 772 people.

The Red Cross is able to offer free smoke alarm installations thanks to

donors. Regional premier event sponsors include Border States Electric and Sanford Health. Supporting event sponsors include American West Insurance Company, Gate City Bank and Goldmark Property Management. Huron area sponsors include the United Way Heartland Region, Dakota Provisions and Coborn’s Superstore.

Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, that’s why we launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
