JRWDD to Consider Funding Request for 3rd Street Dam Improvements

The James River Water Development District will consider a funding request from the City of Huron for improvements to the 3rd Street dam at next week’s regular meeting.

Last week, the city commission authorized the mayor to sign an application for grant funds from the District. The $438,325 being requested would be used to cover part of the cost of a project aimed at improving safety at the 3rd Street dam.

At that meeting, Ted Dickey of the Northeast Council of Governments told commissioners that it was unlikely would receive the full amount being requested.

Stockwell Engineers, Inc. has recommended installing boulders on the downstream side of the low-head dam to remove the undertow. The total cost of the project is $876,650. The grant would cover half of the cost.
