City Commission Meets Monday Night

The Huron City Commission got started with summer projects last night, setting bid dates for three infrastructure projects. The City set January 24th as the date for bids for sewer main lining manhole renovation and street milling and overlay projects. Huron plans to line 45 blocks of sewer main and renovate 39 manhole covers including a lining to add extra years of service. A special assessment wavier request by the Huron Housing Authority was deferred as lawyers were still working on details of the assessments. Also deferred was a presentation on the Downtown Huron Master Plan. The Commission did approve a letter and resolution of support for the project. Commissioners approved full time status for Don Pickering in the Solid Waste Department. The City Commission is not meeting next week in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Along that line garbage collection will be pushed back one day with Monday garbage collected on Tuesday and Tuesday garbage collected Wednesday. The rubble site will be closed next Monday. The Commission went into executive session for a personnel matter, then returned to talk about an ordinance on city personnel. A number of police and fire department employees were at the meeting to express concerns over possible changes to the city’s sick leave and vacation payout policies. One police officer told the commission if the changes proposed were made, he could lose almost 5400 dollars in accrued time
