New Voice Mail Scam Costs SD Non-Profit Thousands

Hackers cost a South Dakota non-profit over six thousand dollars by accessing their voicemail system. The scammers placed thousands of minutes of international long distance calls and skimmed a percentage of the sales as a long distance broker.

Jessie Schmidt of the Better Business Bureau says the Deadwood based organization may have had a default password for their voicemail system. That made it easier for hackers to perpetrate the scam.

Schmidt says creating a strong password for each mailbox will help protect your system. Another step organizations can take is eliminating employees remote access to voicemail. Schmidt says you also may want to look at eliminating international calling through your carrier.
