Daugaard to Pursue Work Requirements for Medicaid

Governor Dennis Daugaard during his State of the State address Tuesday said he has asked the Department of Social Services to pursue a waiver that would require those who receive Medicaid, to work, if they are non-elderly able-bodied adults, after the Trump Administration indicated that it would allow more flexibility to the states regarding administration of federal programs.

He said the work requirements may only apply to a subset of that last category, very low-income able-bodied parents who aren’t already working or caring for a child under 1 year of age.

He has proposed a pilot in both Pennington and Minnehaha Counties, where there is the greatest availability of employment and training resources.

He said they will begin a voluntary program in July but still have to get approval of the waiver.
