Man Arrested in Early Morning Stabbing in Mitchell

A man was stabbed to death in downtown Mitchell early this morning.  At about 2:45, the Mitchell Department of Public Safety received a 911 call about an assault that occurred at 127 ½ E. 2nd Ave. in Mitchell.  Responding officers found an adult male on the ground in that area.  The man was bleeding from several apparent stab wounds.

49-year-old Mitchell resident Anthony Lewis was arrested for the offense of First Degree Manslaughter.  After being awakened by screaming and someone knocking on his door, Lewis allegedly picked up a knife, went outside his apartment complex, and confronted a 30-year-old adult male.  Lewis allegedly stabbed the subject 3 times in the back and 1 time on the front torso.   The male subject who was stabbed was transported to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Lewis faces life in prison on the charge.
