An abandoned cemetery on the southern edge of Sully County north of Harrold is getting a new life.
Cathy Myers of Highmore has done a lot of research on the abandoned cemetery, which is in the middle of a local farmer’s field.
Myers says the cemetery has been abandoned since approximately 1930. Over the years, various organizations have tried to help with upkeep of the cemetery, with little to no luck.
Myers says the individuals buried at the cemetery are original settlers from Norway
She says that there are a lot of babies buried at the cemetery. The cemetery is kind of a mess right now, but she sees light at the end of the tunnel
Myers says that she found healing in restoring the old cemetery while battling breast cancer
Myers is now leading an effort to raise funds to restore the cemetery. She is seeking funds for not only the needed restoration efforts, but a foundation for ongoing expenses.
To donate to the cemetery fund, an account has been set up at the Heartland State Bank in Highmore. You can mail any donations to PO Box 219 Highmore, SD 57345.
