Non-Meandered Waters Committee Could Vote On Bill Friday

A South Dakota legislative committee could vote on a possible bill this week that deals with private lands that have become lakes over the last 25-years. More than two-dozen such lakes were closed following a state Supreme Court ruling on access to flooded land.

Representative Spence Hawley of Brookings serves on the committee and explains the measure

He says the landowners would be responsible for marking the closed off areas with buoys. It also proposes enforcement changes

He suggested the delay on final action to allow more public input. Hawley would like to see some changes

The committee decided to meet again on Friday. A special session of the legislature could be called for June 12th.
