Daugaard Veto Of Buffer Strip Tax Bill Upheld

207th SW WolseyWhile the state Senate found the votes to override the Governor’s veto of SB136, the House did not.
The bill would have changed property tax levies on a fifty foot strip of grassland adjacent to lakes, streams and rivers. Those buffers provide protection from erosion and runoff.
Representative Julie Bartling says the legislature has made a number of changes to tax rules for property…

Representative Steven McCleerey says the cost to counties would be minimal….

Representative Steve Haugaard  says most farmers do a pretty good job of protecting their land….

The override received thirty seven yes votes, twenty eight no, with five excused members. The vote fell short of the two thirds needed to over ride the veto so the bill will not become law.
