Some small retailers earn as much as 50 percent or more or their total annual sales between May and September. Chavez says that small business suffer from undercapitalization because of inventory issues and the lack of an online presence through a website or social media. He says small businesses need to embrace their ability to serve niche markets.

He says that some businesses tend to lose focus in the summer months by interrupting productivity with office parties and social events, which should be held until after the season. Hiring the wrong employees for important positions also hurts any business when it comes to customer experience and satisfaction.
