City Commission Holds Work/Listening Session With Police Department

City of HuronThe Huron City Commission took nearly two hours for an open discussion with over half of the Huron Police Department Monday night. Meyer told the Commission he would like to have that second layer of supervision in case a Captain or Sergeant could not work. One suggestion was to go with two Captains. The department currently has four. The conversation also turned to overtime. Officer Derek Layher who handles the department’s drug dog told the Commission his job was supposed to allow him time to schedule training and search time with detectives. Instead he works a regular patrol shift meaning most additional work with Cody last year was done to the tune of nearly 20-thousand dollars of overtime. Sergeant Brandon Neitzert is leaving the Huron Police Department to take a position with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation in Aberdeen,which will leave an open day shift Sergeant position under the current structure. The Huron City Commission will look to take action on items discussed during the work session in the next few weeks.
