The South Dakota Legislature has passed a statewide ban on texting while driving. Late Thursday morning a conference committee crafted a measure to make texting while driving a secondary offense meaning that a law officer can only cite someone after stopping them for another offense. The measure also calls for a $100 fine, and allows local governments to enforce a stricter ban if they choose. State representative Tona Rozum of Mitchell voted for the bill….
The final vote on the House side was 52-18. The State Senate voted 28-7. Senator Mike Vehle, who spear-headed the texting ban for several years was relieved and thankful…
The bill now goes to Governor Dennis Daugaard for final approval. If the Governor signs the measure, it becomes law July 1st.
