The City of Huron would like to add a second School Resource Officer and the first step to possibly make that happen has been approved by the Huron City Commission. Commissioners Monday night gave approval to Public Safety Director Gary Will to apply for a Community Oriented Policy Office grant. Public Safety Commissioner Mark Robish says the grant would support, a second S-R-O for three years with a fourth year option. Will says one S-R-O just simply spread too thin…

The Huron School District currently pays approximately 20-thousand dollars toward the School Resource Officer position. Should the grant be approved one officer would be assigned to the Huron High School, Washington Elementary and one private school, the second would be assigned to the Middle School, remaining elementary schools and remaining private school. Much like the current S-R-O officer the new S-R-O officer would be able to be placed on street patrol when needed. The Huron School District is in favor of possible expansion pending grant approval to two School Resource Officers.
