1 dead, 1 injured in Rapid City shooting

  •  RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – Authorities say one man is dead and another man is injured after a shooting at a Rapid City trailer park.  Police responded to Riley Court before 5 a.m. Tuesday and found a 21-year-old man injured by three gunshot wounds. Police say he died at the scene,   Police say a 69-year-old man was seriously injured and taken to a Rapid City hospital.

 

SD man sentenced to 50 years in prison for rape

  • RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A 21-year-old Rapid City man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for rape.  Circuit Judge Janine Kern says Isaiah Farrell choked and strangled his 26-year-old victim before hitting her in the face with a rock when she tried to cry out.  The victim’s nose was broken in the March attack.  Court records show Farrell met the victim online and the attack occurred on their second meeting.  Farrell pleaded guilty to second-degree rape. Prosecutors dismissed aggravated assault charges.  Assistant state’s attorney Ryan Ryder says that the maximum sentence of 50 years was appropriate given Farrell’s criminal history. Farrell was convicted of aggravated assault in 2009 and served 2 1/2 years in prison.

 

Trial moved for former Wagner police chief

  • WAGNER, S.D. (AP) – The trial for the former Wagner police chief accused of covering up his girlfriend’s methamphetamine use has been moved to Mitchell.  A  judge has signed an order moving the trial for 44-year-old Jim Chaney from Charles Mix County to Davison County.  Prosecutors say Chaney tried to cover up his girlfriend’s meth use by hiding her used needles in his office. He has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to report a crime.  The trial is scheduled to begin in October. Court documents say Chaney could not receive a fair trial in Charles Mix County because he arrested a “large number” of residents and played a role in several “drug-related tragedies” in the area.  

 

Motorcycle parts firm to open factory in Sturgis

  • STURGIS, S.D. (AP) – A Southern California motorcycle parts manufacturer is planning to hire 30 workers when it opens a new facility next year in Sturgis.  Samson Exhaust of Brea, Calif., has begun construction on a 45,000-square-foot building on a three-acre site in the Sturgis Industrial Park.  City officials say the project that is expected to be completed in April.  Samson Exhaust is a 21-year-old company that manufactures exhaust systems, mufflers and accessories for motorcycles.  Samson founder and chief executive officer Kenny Price says he has long wanted to move his manufacturing operation to Sturgis.

 

Tribal veteran’s cemetery to be built in S. Dakota

  •  PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) – The Oglala Sioux Tribe has announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs has approved the creation of a new tribal veteran’s cemetery on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.  The tribe in a news release says the Department of Veterans Affairs is awarding a $6.5 million grant for the cemetery, which will be located on 63 acres of land about 8 miles east of Kyle.  The grant money will go toward establishing a cemetery entrance, roads, administration building, memorial walkway and burial areas. The construction will include 260 pre-placed crypts and 40 gravesites.  Veterans, their spouses and children will be allowed to be buried at the cemetery.  The tribe will bless the land during a ceremony on Wednesday. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 4.

 

Commissioners to discuss future of Bath FD

  • GROTON, S.D. (AP) – The Brown and Day county commissions plan to meet Tuesday to discuss the future of the Bath Township fire district.  The Aberdeen American News reports that Bath firefighters want their department to become a satellite station of the Groton Area Fire Protection and Rescue District.  Commissioners will listen to public testimony during the 2 p.m. meeting at the Groton Community Center.  The Bath department was facing the possibility of closure because it did not have 15 volunteers. That’s the minimum number required by South Dakota law to keep a fire department open.

  

SD Aeronautics Commission to meet in Pierre

  • PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Aeronautics Commission is meeting in Pierre on Tuesday.  The board is scheduled to discuss aeronautical hazard applications, financial assistance agreements and an SDSU safety initiative using a flight simulator.  Commissioners are also slated to review state aviation laws and discuss an Aberdeen fuel tax request.    

 

Brokaw, wife named marshals at SD parade

  • VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) – Tom and Meredith Brokaw have been named marshals for the Dakota Days Parade at the University of South Dakota next month.  The veteran NBC newsman and his wife both graduated from USD in the 1960s. They also are Yankton natives.  The parade is slated for Oct. 6
