ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) – A former South Dakota county prosecutor and a child advocate have an October trial date on charges that they encouraged a child abuse victim to lie. Former deputy Brown County prosecutor Brandon Taliaferro and advocate Shirley Schwab are charged with witness tampering and tolerating false statements made under oath. The witness tampering charges are the most serious. They carry a possible 10-year prison term. Taliaferro and Schwab deny the charges. Supporters have set up a legal defense fund for them. Tailaferro handled child abuse and neglect cases when he was a prosecutor. He was fired last September. The trial is scheduled to start Oct. 29 and is expected to last a week. It will be held in the Brown County courthouse in Aberdeen. The case is being prosecuted by Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore.
