As technology continues to evolve, more of the available spectrum to keep that technology connected has been consumed. Now, there are concerns the continued usage of the air waves by mobile devices will result in possible data outages as early as the end of 2013. AT&T Regional Vice President of External Affairs Beth Canuteson based in Des Moines, says smartphones have played a large role in the data increase, but she’d like to see more wireless spectrum leased from the FCC.

Canuteson says the construction of new towers, more Wi-Fi networks, and the elimination of unlimited data plans helps to conserve spectrum, but even available spectrum must go through a substantial amount of red tape before it can be used.
