The Year: 2013

The end of the year means it’s time to remember the news stories that were a part of our lives for the past 365 days.  Below is the player containing the Performance Radio News Year in Review, along with the photographs to go along with the biggest news stories of 2013.

2013 Year End Review




  •  Jan. 7th.Fire destroys the Highway 14 Roadhouse in Cavour.  A cause is never determined.
  • Jan.8th  Charles Beeney escapes from the Beadle County Jail.  He is arrested that evening in Sioux Falls and would be sentenced in May to 35 years in prison.
  • Feb. 2nd  A coach bus chartered by the Sturgis Scoopers Girls Basketball Team catches fire in the parking lot of a Huron motel.
  • Feb. 4th  Thoung Sing pleads guilty to aggravated assualt for a case that started in December of 2011 when he was arrested on attempted murder charges for trying to choke his pregnant wife.  He was sentenced to time served and probation.
  • Feb 27th.  Dakota Provisions joins the federal IMAGE program, a self compliance program aimed at preventing the employment of illegal immigrants.
  • Mar. 4th  The KIDS First effort begins to promote passage of a bond issue to fund renovations to Huron’s aging elementary schools.
  • Apr 16th.  Election Day,  Paul Aylward is elected Huron Mayor, Gary Harrington elected to Huron City Commission, Garrett Bischoff and Sherman Gose elected to Huron School Board, Elementary School Bond issue passed with 71% approval.
  • May 6th.  Long time Huron Mayor Dave McGirr passes the gavel to imcoming Mayor Paul Aylward.
  • May 24th.  Splash Central opens on the former campus of Huron University.  The park would see 1600 visitors on it’s opening Memorial Day weekend.
  • June 5th.  The water tower in Winter Park is dismantled.
  • June 10th.  The City of Huron begins in roll out single stream recycling.
  • June 21st.  A severe wind storm does significant tree damage to Huron.  A wind gust of 87 mph was reported as the storm moved through town at 2:51 pm
  • July 23rd.  The South Dakota Farmer’s Union building is demolished as a new modern building was constructed next door.
  • Aug. 15th  Horizon Health Care opens a clinic in De Smet.  Sen. Tim Johnson would visit the facility paid for in part by the Affordable Care Act six days later on August 21st.
  • Sept 1st.  Gwen Sebastian is one of many national entertainers to grace the South Dakota State Fair.
  • Sept 9th.  Huron School Board opens a sealed agreement between the district and former Superintendent Ross Opsal.
  • Sept 20th.  Raven Aerostar Closes
  • Sept 23rd.  Jeff Banks is chosen as the first full time City Attorney of the City of Huron.  He replaced Gerry Kaufman, who left to take a job as the Director of Policy and Legal Services for the Associated School Boards of South Dakota after 10 years as a part-time contracted city attorney.
  • Dec 6th.  Former Beadle County Courthouse janitor Fred Sylaart is sentenced to 90 days in the Beadle County Jail on a sexual contact charge after pleading guilty to touching a child who attended a home daycare operated by his wife.
  • Dec 26th.  John Rose is sentenced to 50 years in prison on a first degree rape charge for sexual contact with a family member.  The 66 year old will be eligible for parole when he is 92.
